The French were the earliest European settlers in Nova Scotia, using dykes to cultivate the land. These settlers became a distinct cultural group known as the Acadians. In the Great Expulsion of 1755, thousands of Acadians were deported by the British, but many later returned to this region. To this day, the Acadian dialect and culture remain strong in Yarmouth County.
