Chapter 5.42 New York City to Albany (continued)
(Sunday Sep 3rd). Rose early and immediately after breakfast walked out to a look at the city before church time. In the rear of the city is a deep and picturesque ravine in which there are several brick kilns - abrupt precipices – We stood for some time admiring the scene. Walked through the fine park in which stands the City Hall. Noble trees indeed! Sycamores – Weeping Willows - Catalpas – and many fine ornamental trees which I had never seen. Their size gave them a grand appearance. The Academy is a beautiful building (quite eminent). Passed a fine show of purple grapes in a gentlemen’s garden, but they were “very sour”!
St. Peter’s is a handsome stone church – pulpit and reading desk of a simple and elegant form.
